Summer Rowing Special
As the summer starts rolling around and championship season is coming to a close for many clubs some of you may be looking for guidance in training and taking your performance to a new level.  I know here at our club we are offering multiple different camps (elite camp to go to club nationals, an elite sculling camp, returning rower camp, my own strength camp, and various learn-to-row camps) and I...

Good day of squatting as I dial things in for nationals. Last heavy day of actual training before the meet. Hitting openers next week. 145 lbs (8), (8) 265 lbs (5) 315 lbs (3) 355 lbs (1) added belt here 405 lbs (1) 445 lbs (1) added wraps here - wrapped loose 500 lbs (1) 550 lbs (1) - PR but nothing i had to amp myself up for. Reverse band squat (bands took off 30 lbs at the bottom helped...

Solid day of racing here at USRowing Southeastern Youth Regionals in Sarasota Florida. My team did quite well with all of our varsity boats (kids I directly work with, we don’t strength train until they’re on Varsity) all will proceed to the finals tomorrow.  I’m proud of all the hard work and dedication to excellence of my rowers and hope to see continued success tomorrow with...

Followers, some of you may have the same issue I have where you find yourself ripping slacks/jeans apart if you buy them to fit, or they either swamp you due to a large butt/legs and a small waist.  I’ve decided I’m just going to start getting custom stuff and was curious if anyone has ever used this site  http://www.makeyourownjeans.com/?

Day of Celebration
It’s a great day to be alive!  Enjoy it! 1.  I squatted 535 today, and it was easy, flew up and looked like 405.  Unfortunately this will be the last time I squat heavy before nationals since I have to miss out on squatting next week due to coaching obligations (regionals down in Sarasota for 3 days).  That being said it’s a good confidence boost and making me debate whether or not...

feelitturn replied to your photo: APC GA Open - 181 lbs weight class raw - 325 lbs Do they not have the feet-flat-on-the-floor rule? Not in this federation.  I change my foot position based on how my hip flexor feels (partially torn).  If it’s not feeling too bad then I go feet down as I get more leg drive out of it, if it feels like crap than I go up on my toes (at least if it’s...

Weight Loss Client Results
“I came to Ty in as a mess, I had been at my highest weight ever (283 lbs @ 5’9”).  I had no clue what to do, I didn’t work out unless you counted the occasional Wi-Fit game, my nutrition consisted of fast food and microwave dinners and though I had tried to lose weight multiple times, I’d fall off the wagon after a week or two and what little weight I did lose came...

This is why I coach
“Happy Birthday Coach Ty (for real this time)! On a scholarship application I wrote about how my super cool strength and conditioning coach inspired my future career in sports medicine, hope that makes you feel special!” Facebook message from one of my rowers.  It’s the simple things that kids say that continue to make my job as a coach truly mean something.

melaniecanrun replied to your post: Happy Birthday! I’m relatively new to using rowing machines and I was wondering if you have any pointers on form and decreasing stroke rate? I’m currently rowing a 1:50min 500m at about 27s/m. I want to (eventually) row a 1:30 500m and I think my technique leaves a lot to be desired. I’d appreciate any pointers! :) Thanks for the pointers! I may be overreaching...

Accidentally squatted 405 + 175 lbs band tension (580 lbs at the top).  Didn’t realize the bands were on and just figured it felt heavy since I hadn’t squatted heavy since the meet. It flew up. I then squatted 445 + 175 band tension (620 at the top) on purpose which also flew up.  Things are progressing well.

do-the-russian-twist asked: Thankyou for the advice! The steady state is something I'm definitely doing a lot of at the moment (at least 10k/day), and as the term goes on I think our coach will have us doing some speedwork too. As for weight training, I can squat 55x6 and deadlift 50x6 but I have a back injury atm.. Should I swap plyos for weights? Also as for the size thing, oxford lightweight women are all quite short...

do-the-russian-twist asked: I guess one major thing is that I progressed quickly in my first 2 months of training, and in my 2nd term, but we have 5 week holidays where I can't get to an erg, so I run and do plyometrics and strength workouts instead but it is less specific so I guess less effective even though I'm training 6x week. I'm very small (5'3 and 55kg), and I just started weight training and now...

findingfitagain asked: Hey, I'm asking on behalf of my boyfriend, he's just started coming to the gym with me and is doing Stronglifts too. He's very tall (6'4'') and has a bit of trouble with flexibility - when he squats, he can get down to parallel but has trouble keeping his back up. Usually at the bottom of the squat his back is almost parallel to the floor, which always makes me cringe...

do-the-russian-twist answered your question: Hump Day Question Time hey so I’m a rower, looking to trial for the LW oxford blue boat, but I feel like I’ve stagnated in my progress. How can I beat a plateau? Assess first why you are plateauing.  Are you at a plateau because of your aerobic ability, your ability to produce high watts (power), or is it something mental possibly?  Once you know what...

theycallmemiketaylor answered your question: Hump Day Question Time I know this question is limited in scope w/o a video, but any advice for falling forward out of the hole? As you said, it’s hard to tell if it’s technical in nature or if it’s muscular.  Now if it’s muscular, I’m a fan of what I term “disaster training”.  In other words, train for...

A response to a someone that complained about criticism from a coach: You’re going to deal with a lot of people in life that owe you nothing, that don’t care how you feel and simply want you to perform. That is life. If you crumble under negativity and pressure then you’re going to have a rough road ahead of you because there are going to be plenty of bosses, university...

forever-athlete replied to your post: Friday Question Time What’s the difference between a complex and a circuit? I’ve always considered complexes to be a series of compound movements where your hands never leave the bar done in high intensity interval fashion moving from movement to movement quickly.  Circuits are usually slower paced (though not always) with separation between movements....

m3fitness asked: My answer was too long for the question so here it is! :P I personally believe that the difference is purpose. People who are living are just going day by day doing what is necessary and expected of them. When you exist you have a purpose to your life. You live to enjoy life to the fullest and pursue your dreams whatever they may be.

keepcoolkeeplosing answered your question: Question of the day - 10 I believe that existing is doing just enough to make it through the day. Living is doing everything you can everyday to live life to the full Is it possible to “live” every day?  Or on occasion, maybe more than every now and then, is simply existing an option?
